Gloucestershire Wheelchair Service, Independent Living Centre, Village Road, Cheltenham, GL51 0BY

The Gloucestershire Wheelchair Service (GWS) provides wheelchairs and accessories to those with medium-high-specialist needs and who will need the equipment for long term use of more than six months.  

Free maintenance and repairs will be provided on all NHS wheelchairs, which remain the property of the NHS. The initial referral only needs to be made via a healthcare professional. After this GWS can accept self-referrals.  

Assessments are carried out in clinics held at the Independent Living Centre in Cheltenham, and in special schools, with home visits in exceptional circumstances only. Appointments are available between 9.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.  

Low Needs wheelchairs

Those requiring a Low Needs wheelchair for long term regular use (more than 6 months) can request an assessment from their healthcare professional who has been trained as a wheelchair assessor, such as a nurse, occupational therapist or physiotherapist. They can order the wheelchair directly from GIS Healthcare. Alternatively, please ask at your GP surgery. A voucher scheme is also available for Low Needs wheelchairs. 

Those requiring a Low Needs wheelchair for short term use (less than 6 months) can request an assessment from a healthcare professional who can order a wheelchair directly from GIS Healthcare. Please refer to the Community Equipment Service for more information. Alternatively, please ask at your GP surgery.

NHS wheelchair loans cannot be arranged for occasional or holiday use: please contact organisations such as The Red Cross (call 01452 726666 or visit www.redcross.org.uk

  • Powered wheelchairs (indoor and indoor/outdoor) for those unable to use a manual chair; outdoor use is enabled following a safety awareness and driving skills assessment

What is the NHS Wheelchair Voucher Scheme?

The NHS wheelchair voucher scheme offers choice to those wanting a higher specification wheelchair above that prescribed, by enabling the client to contribute to the cost.  Eligibility applies. For more information please refer to the voucher leaflet.
