Cinderford District Nursing TeamA Gloucester volunteer with more than 50 years’ service, a tireless advocate for homeless healthcare and a team of community nurses who provide end-of-life care were among the stars at a recent NHS awards ceremony.
Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust held its second annual Celebrating You awards on Thursday (May 21), with three separate showcase events held across the county and attended by more than 150 colleagues and volunteers from health and social care.

Presenting the awards, Paul Jennings, Trust chief executive, said: “These awards are a real opportunity to say “thank you” to the outstanding individuals and teams who work across the Trust’s community health and adult social care services, providing support to local people. We received 168 nominations this year, and I know everyone always says it, but it really was difficult to pick our finalists!

"It was an honour to hear members of staff talking so passionately about the work that colleagues are doing day in, day out, and to come together to recognise their dedication and compassion.”

The three events were held at Cirencester Football Club, Gloucester Guildhall and the Foxes Bridge Community Centre in Cinderford, where Trust Chair Ingrid Barker and Paul Jennings celebrated achievements with locally based teams.

Cinderford District Nursing Team won the Caring Award, with the nomination citing their exemplary end-of-life care for a young person as an example of the work they do across the Forest of Dean.

Brenda Saunders, who started volunteering at Hucclecote Baby Clinic in 1964 and continues to this day in the same role, won Volunteer of the Year for her unwavering commitment and unique length of service.

And Anna Gibbins, who has worked with so many communities across Gloucestershire for a number of years, including developing Grab and Go bags of hot and healthy food for the homeless, as well as sourcing and distributing practical aid such as clean socks and plastic sheeting, won the Understanding You award.

In total there were nine categories of awards, with four representing the values of the Trust – Caring, Open, Responsible and Effective – and a further five for Volunteer of the Year, Innovator of the Year, Team of the Year, Excellence and Understanding You.

Ingrid Barker, Chair of the Trust, said: “We often hear from our colleagues, service users and their families about the difference that an amazing nurse, therapist, receptionist, administrator and back-office support can make to their experience of the Trust.

"There is no bed like your own bed, and that’s why we’re committed to delivering high quality care for the people of Gloucestershire in their neighbourhood. Our finalists are all exceptional, and have all demonstrated a real commitment to understanding what our service users need, and delivering care as close to home as possible.”
