Stoptober brandingStoptober launches this week to encourage and support people who wish to quit smoking. The national mass stop smoking attempt saw 160,000 people complete the challenge last year.

Someone who quits smoking for Stoptober, and doesn’t smoke again, could gain an extra seven days of life, every 28 days, for the rest of their life.

More than 86,000 people in Gloucestershire smoke every day. Nationally, smoking remains the biggest killer with half of long-term smokers dying prematurely from a smoking disease.

A person stopping smoking for 28 days is five times more likely to stay smokefree and Stoptober’s ambition is to help smokers achieve this goal.

Events are being run around the county by the NHS stop smoking service, where smokers who want to quit can get support, motivation and information. Events are also taking place at community hospitals.

Elaine Watson, Head of Health Improvement at Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust said ‘Our stop smoking service has helped more than 35,000 people to stop smoking since we started. We want to encourage every smoker in Gloucestershire to consider making a quit attempt this October and join the thousands of people who are feeling the benefits from stopping smoking last year. Smokers find it much easier to quit if others are doing so at the same time. So come and sign up, join the challenge and get the best help and support available.’

Stoptober 2013 starts on Tuesday 1st October and runs for 28 days. For more information and to join the biggest stop smoking challenge of its kind, go to Stoptober online at www.
