Our cardiac rehabilitation service has a national reputation for excellence. Annie MacCallum, a leading nurse specialist in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and care, heads up a highly-skilled team of nursing specialists. We work in partnership with a range of other organisations, including national research and charitable organisations such as the British Heart Foundation.

Our service has been based at the Trust headquarters in Brockworth since 2011 having brought together teams based at Gloucester Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital and our existing cardiovascular disease team.

Our home visiting service

We provide a home visiting service to patients who are unable to attend either clinics or cardiac rehabilitation programmes.

We aim to contact patients referred by telephone within four days of referral, and aim to see them within two weeks of discharge. During the visit, we provide a symptom assessment, a medication/compliance review, record blood pressure and heart rate, and ECG if indicated. We discuss risk factors, advise re return to activities and refer onto a Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme. We also refer patients on to other agencies as required, ie Age UK, Social Services, Healthy Lifestyles Gloucestersahire.

Following our visit, we write to the patient's GP to inform them of the assessment, and will liaise with their cardiologist/cardio-thoracic surgeon as required.

Our cardiac rehabilitation programme

We run a six-week rolling programme of structured exercise and education sessions which are centred on the current evidence base for coronary artery disease, covering risk factor management and disease education.

These are held at seven different venues throughout the county:

  • Belle Vue Centre, Cinderford
  • Oxstalls gym, Gloucester
  • The Reddings Community Centre, Cheltenham
  • St Joseph's Church Hall, Stonehouse
  • Matson Baptist Church
  • Prestbury Centre
  • Siddington Village Hall

Self-management programme using our Heart Manual

For those patients who are unable or do not wish to attend a cardiac programme, we offer the Heart Manual, a self-management programme supported by our specialist team.

Recovery Programme option

This is a one-off secondary prevention education programme option for patients not wishing to participate in the exercise component or to commit to a 6 week programme.
